Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is rapidly advancing in Sri Lanka’s EV market through a strategic partnership with John Keells CG Auto. The two companies recently signed an MoU to introduce DENZA, BYD’s luxury electric vehicle brand, showcasing models like the D9, N7, Z9, and Z9GT. This move aims to offer Sri Lankan consumers high-end, sustainable transport options.
Following the easing of import restrictions in 2025, BYD has seen a surge in demand, with over 5,000 electric and hybrid units already reserved. In response, BYD and John Keells are expanding their presence across Sri Lanka, opening new showrooms in Ampara and Ratnapura, while strengthening their after-sales network in key cities including Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, and Colombo.
John Keells has also been appointed as the exclusive distributor for BYD’s yet-to-be-launched commercial vehicle range. Liu Xueliang of BYD described Sri Lanka as a “key market” in South Asia, capable of becoming a global model for the benefits of electric mobility.
The partnership signals a major step in Sri Lanka’s transition to cleaner transport, driven by growing consumer interest and strategic industry collaboration.
